These embroidered baskets are hand woven by members of our partner co-operative in Kenya and hand-embellished by a collective of embroiderers in Rwanda. You could say they’re the perfect marriage of creativity and style…

An all-female effort, the weavers learned their craft from their mothers and grandmothers, and work within a thriving Kenyan cooperative. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets, The Basket Room keeps them busy with regular and fairly paid basket orders, enabling these subsistence farmers to earn a flexible supplementary income in the dry seasons.

The highly skilled embroiderers who add the finishing details to these fabulous woven baskets work as part of a cooperative whose main aims are to support economic development and the empowerment of women in rural Rwanda. Many of these craftswomen were taught the fine art of embroidery by Belgian nuns living in Rwanda in the seventies, and today their work is as exceptional as it was when their workshop was first set up.
